40 Days of Prayer not Protest
by Eric Slaughter, Coordinator of the fall vigil in Indianapolis

40 Days for Life is a peaceful, prayerful witness to the truth of abortion. Our purpose is to pray, to repent of our sins and seek God's forgiveness. We are interceding on behalf of the pre-born babies and their families, for the abortionists and other abortion facility workers. We are praying for the conversion of all who are abortion-minded. We are not protesting.

For this reason we have limited the number of signs available at the vigil site to five. While use of the signs is important to communicate why we are there -  to pray for the end of abortion - the signs can also be a distraction. The reason for reducing the number of signs is to encourage most of those in attendance to simply pray. Though our purpose is to pray, our physical presence at PP is also to inspire those driving by to consider the harm abortion does to our society. Most people understand the power and purpose of prayer and seeing people out there everyday rain or shine, hot or cold sends a message of hope. If these same people see only signs the message they receive is not one of hope, but one of protest and condemnation, neither of which we are there to do.

So we ask those coming to keep the vigil to use only the signs provided at the site, so that the majority of the prayer partners will be seen doing just that, praying.

Thank you all for your hard work, support and cooperation as we continue this forty day period of conversion.

Gabriel Mom in Columbus Needs a Car
Lourdes Padilla, project coordinator, and several Gabriel "Angels" have been helping Susan (not her real name) in Columbus for several months.

Susan gave birth last June and also gained full custody of her 18 month old son. She had been through all the support classes that she was mandated to attend, with a lot of help from Kelly Snoddy who watched her children for her a lot of the times she had to attend class.

Susan struggled to find a job, which in addition to providing her with an income, will also improve her chances of getting subsidized housing. She found a good job at a local factory, but the shift she has to work is from 2:45 - 10:45 PM. She needed care for her children and the Gabriel Angels came through again providing childcare in shifts until she could make other arrangements. The Body of Christ works!

Part of the goal of the angels was to keep Susan from being dependent on the friends who had led her to make poor choices in the first place. At this point Susan is trying to pay off old traffic tickets to get her driver's license back. Then she will need a car. If anyone can donate a car to the project, that would be most helpful. If someone wants to donate money to help pay the fines, that would also be appreciated. To donate the money by credit card, click here or send a check to The Gabriel Project, P.O. Box 1612, Columbus, IN 47202.

God bless you for always being so generous in helping the women we work with. If you are not sure, pray and ask the Holy Spirit what you should do.

October 5, 2009

Seven saves have been reported in Indiana by four vigil sites -Bloomington, Indianapolis, Merrillville and South Bend.

South Bend
We are just getting caught up on this report. Mary Acres shared the wonderful news this weekend that through God's grace three women in South Bend have walked away from their abortion site since 40 Days for Life has started.

Indianapolis
Indianapolis had a second save this past Saturday. It was a littel miracle of God's timing that made it happen. Planned Parenthood was closed, but 10 - 30 prayer partners from 40 Days for Life - Indy gathered all day at the site anyway.

A young woman pulled into the driveway and went around the back of the building to park thinking that the facility was open for business. In a very short time, she came back, but stopped in the long driveway and looked at the 20+ people praying on the front lawn.

Steve Dlugosz, the Pro-Life Coordinator at St. Monica Parish, Indianapolis noticed her and approached the car asking if she needed help. Gina (not her real name) told Steve that she had just discovered that she was pregnant and had come to "take care of it" and found PP closed. Steve spoke from his heart and told Gina that PP did not "take care" of anyone and that they would kill her baby and leave her with great regrets.

He continued to talk with her for several minutes and assured her that he would find real help for her if she would give him her name and phone number. She responded positively, gave him the information and left.

It happened so quickly that it left Steve somewhat shocked. Denny Woelfel, a sidewalk counselor, approached Steve to see what had happened. Steve told him and Denny shared the joy and advised Steve to call the Gabriel Project immediately so that they could follow-up.

The Gabriel Project spoke with Gina that afternoon and learned that she had just moved to Indianapolis recently for a job and college opportunity. On Friday she discovered that she was pregnant and before she could tell her boyfriend, he announced that he had just been layed off. That news coupled with the fact that she was already a single Mom with a 10 year old child, mad her panic and run to Planned Parenthood for "help".

With God's grace, she picked one of the few days that PP is closed and it also happened to be during our fall 40 Days for Life vigil. Now God's plan for her baby can come to fruition.

Bloomington and Merrillville
Each vigil site has had one "save" since the beginning of 40 Days for Life - Sept. 23.

October 2, 2009

Three saves have been reported in Indiana by three vigil sites -Indianapolis, Merrillville and Bloomington.

Merrillville
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the first day of our fall vigil, Dee Tripp, a sidewalk counselor at the Merrillville Planned Parenthood reported a save! Many Wednesdays Dee is alone, but on this day several other people had come to pray as part of the 40 Days for Life campaign.

A 22 year old woman on her way into PP for "counseling" stopped to talk with Dee and told her that the father of her baby was pressuring her to abort. Most of the women who come for abortions are there because someone or something is pressuring them and they believe that they have no other choice. See counselors and other people praying at the abortion center, gives these women hope.

After a lengthy conversation with Dee, the woman did not go into the abortion center. Dee said that it was amazing to watch the Lord change her heart as the woman listened intently to them. She was hearing what no one else in her life was telling her. She went back to her car and just sat there thinking for 20 minutes while the Prayer Partners from 40 Days continued to pray for her. She finally left and has not returned for an abortion.

Indianapolis
This incident was previously reported, but additional facts have been added here. On Friday, Sept. 25 a
woman on her way into Planned Parenthood allowed Denny Woelfel, a sidewalk counselor, to pray over her and accepted a pamphlet of information from him. She was on a mission to find a family she knew, who had broght their 13 year old for an abortion. The woman asked Denny for additional pamphlets that she could share with others inside. Denny and his wife, Margaret Ann, gave her all their pamphlets and continued to pray for her as she drove into the parking lot behind Planned Parenthood.

As they drove out, the mother of the 13 year old told Denny about the encounter inside the mill and that their hearts had been touched. With the support of her family, the 13 year old chose life for her baby!

Bloomington
Yesterday, through God's grace, a young woman scheduled for an abortion at Planned Parenthood in Bloomington, chose life for her baby. The "save" was reported by Marian Leahy, an Indianapolis sidewalk counselor, who is going to pray and counsel at Bloomington during 40 Days for Life.

Bloomington, home of Indiana University, is in Monroe County, which is reported to have the highest per capita abortion count in Indiana.

St. Lawrence Adoration on Wednesdays

Every Wednesday during 40 Days for Life, adoration is held at St. Lawrence Church in Indianapolis. For details contact Penny Johnson at 317-252-8576 or email.

Tuesday Evening Vespers at St. Jude
Every Tuesday at 7:00 PM during 40 Days for Life, Deacon Wes Jones is leading evening vespers at St. Jude, Indianapolis. For further information, contact Margaret Stapleton at 317-883-1103 or email.

Special Alert – Baby Saved
September 25, 2009

Elaine Alvarez, our 40 Days for Life webmaster, just called me from Planned Parenthood where amazing things are happening!

Bob Rust, the head of our local Truth and Compassion sidewalk counselors, reminded Elaine that this is the first killing day since our 40 Days for Life began on Wednesday and thanked her and the Prayer Partners present for their support.

Later Bob reported to Elaine that there had been a save! The story is most unusual...

A woman on her way into the abortion center this morning allowed Denny Woelfel, a sidewalk counselor, to pray over her and accepted a pamphlet of information from him. After she went into Planned Parenthood, she shared the information with the family of a 13 year old, who was there for an abortion. As they drove out, the mother of the 13 year old told Denny about the encounter inside the mill and that their hearts had been touched. With the support of her family, the 13 year old chose life for her baby!

Killing Days
In Indiana, women are supposed to be "counseled," wait at least 18 hours and then come for their abortion. Each week the schedule at the four abortion centers changes as to which days are "counseling days" and which days are "killing days". We will try to keep you informed this fall of the days designated as abortions days.

At Planned Parenthood this week, babies are being aborted on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. At 1201 N. Arlington, they are aborting babies on Thursday afternoon and all day on Friday. Babies are scheduled for abortions this week at W 16th St. on Friday and Saturday and The center near the Airport aborted babies this week on Wednesday.

If anyone would like to pray at one of the three other centers, please contact Elizabeth Kane, a sidewalk counselor, at catholichic4life(at)aol.com. After each 40 Days campaign, at least one person has joined the ranks of the sidewalk counselors. Is God calling you this year?

Dennis DiMauro
Billions of dollars are spent each year on diet plans. But Jesus tells us to stop worrying so much about our bodies, and instead to trust in God's care for our physical needs.

What would happen if the people who had started on a low-carb diet this year had instead gone on a diet of heavenly food? For non-believers that diet would include trusting in Christ for their salvation, and for believers it would include a renewed prayer life, a new Bible study, or even a spiritual fast. This diet doesn't include giving up on certain kinds of foods. What this diet includes is giving up on anxiety by resting in the loving arms of Christ, trusting that He will provide.

Such a spiritual diet also frees us from our worries, and allows us to freely praise Him and serve others. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

This promised provision teaches us the inestimable worth of our lives. He will not allow us to go without. This intimate knowledge and care for human life on the part of our gracious God is what motivates us to seek for the preservation of human life in all its stages.

September 24, 2009

Yesterday, the first day of our fall 40 Days for Life, started as a warm and rainy day. Prayer Partners came to pray from St. Barnabas, St. Jude and St. Monica as well as from several other churches and organizations to cover each hour in prayer. My husband, Jim, and I drove up from Columbus for the last hour and joined 14 other adults and five beautiful children.

13 "Saves" During Spring 2009 40 Days
This is the third fall campaign for Indianapolis and it is coming together very well. I'm sure that the personnel at Planned Parenthood are not happy to see us - again. During the spring 2009 campaign, with God's grace, 13 mothers chose life for their babies.

72 Babies "Saved" in Indianapolis in 2009

The official count of babies documented as "saves" in Indianapolis since January 1 this year is 72. The most recent "save" occurred at 1201 N. Arlington St. where Margaret and Denny Woefel helped a woman decide for   life for her pre-born baby on Monday.

BLOG: Prayer AND Fasting
Joseph Lehner writes the following about fasting on the blog:
FASTING: CRUCIAL SPIRITUAL WEAPON WAITING TO BE USED
When we consider the tragic consequences of abortion, its spiritual underpinnings, and our seeming inability to bring it to an end, we are tempted to fall into despair. How can we banish this horrific practice from our midst? Will we ever see victory in this battle?

We cannot do it- only God can deliver us from this evil. Only God can bring victory. As Jesus responded to his disciples when they asked why they couldn't deliver out a certain evil spirit: "some can be delivered out only by prayer and fasting" (Mk 9:29). We should consider this reality when we ask how and when this struggle against abortion will end.

Learn more about fasting at our blog, which can be accessed from our website, www.40daysforlife.com/Indianapolis.

Fr. Frank Pavone
"Those of us who have participated in the killing of unborn children are the Centurions of today. We have dropped our swords against the unborn child. Now we must recognize the depth of our guilt and deal with the ramifications... To revitalize our humanity we need to forgive and be forgiven, to reconcile and be healed."

These words come from a brochure of the Society of Centurions, an organization for former abortion providers. These words convey in a beautiful and moving way what is happening across the nation as hundreds of abortionists and their staff members experience repentance, conversion, and healing.

How does this conversion begin? Dr. Philip Ney writes, "The factors that changed their opinion on performing abortions, in the following order of frequency, were: evidence of the infant's humanity, a spiritual experience, personal distress, evidence of the mother's distress, scientific articles, being accepted as a person, a personal relationship with a pro-lifer, pro-life pickets." (The Centurion's Pathway, p. 77).

The journey is not easy. But the Jesus who heals us calls us to face the truth of what we've done, make restitution where possible, and engage in the hard work of mending relationships. Let's pray for the Centurions; may their numbers increase!

procession
Before a 2.6 mile Prayer Procession to Planned Parenthood

Blow the trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly. Gather the people, notify the congregation. Assemble the elders; gather the children and the infants at the breast... Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep and say, "Spare, O Lord, your people."  -Joel 2:1517

prayWe are calling for prayer and fasting from this day through Sunday, Nov. 1 as we ask God to end abortion. We are not alone as six cities in Indianapolis and 206 other cities join us in this effort. Our faith and the knowledge that over 1500 "saves" have been documented during previous campaigns gives us the strength to fulfill our promise of prayer and fasting. God will hear our prayers and heal our country.

Prayer Requests
Barbara (not her real name) is a 17 year old in Ohio who recently called the Gabriel Helpline. The newly formed Gabriel Project in Wooster arranged an ultrasound appointment for her. After telling her mother about her pregnancy, Barbara's mother made an appointment for her at Planned Parenthood this morning. Please pray that her mother's heart is softened and that Barbara will have wisdom when relating to her mother and fortitiude to protect herself and her baby from harm.

Donna (not her real name)will participate in an orientation this Thursday, which, if successful, will result in a new position for her.

Anticipation (from the Indy Blog)
As I sit here tonight awaiting the Kick Off Rally tomorrow,  while holding my precious sleeping infant, I praise God for the gift of life. I think about how my life has completely changed since I had my son, and for the better. At the same time, mixed emotions overcome me. I become a little sad remembering how 6 years ago I was not in the best of places. Alone and scared, because I was separated from my abusive ex-husband. Alone and scared, because I was raped and as a result became pregnant.

What was I to do? Where was I to go? Who would believe me? Who would help me? Too many questions occupied my mind. No longer being able to keep this secret, I had to tell someone, so at five months pregnant I told my parents. But not everything. Out of fear and shame, I did not tell them about the rape. Everyone was happy and excited, but I was not. How could I be? I put on a good face and tried to go along with everyone else.

August 28, 2009

I believe miracles happen everyday. Two miracles have been reported from northwest Indiana - one by Bob Falcone, a Knight of Columbus, and the other by Karen Wilson, office manager for Lake County Right to Life.

40 DaysIn only 26 days Hoosiers like the ones pictured here will be praying at six sites around the state for an end to abortion at the fall, 2009 40 Days for Life campaign. See schedule and contact information below. Amy Martin and her son are pictured here at the vigil last spring in Indianapolis. If you know someone afraid to join us, please send them this picture.

Miracle at Lake County Right to Life
Cy Huerter, President of Lake County Right to Life called an organizational meeting for the fall 09 - 40 Days for Life campaign on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 6:00 PM. Normally Karen Wilson has the office open until 5:00 PM and no one is there in the evening.

Near the end of the meeting, around 8:00 PM, Karen answered the phone and found herself talking with a woman who wanted an abortion. Nancy (not her real name) had three other children and was living with her grandfather and could not see any other option in her situation.

Karen remained calm and remembered that Dee Tripp, a sidewalk counselor, was at the meeting. Dee took over the phone call and the woman realized that she really did not want an abortion, but she did need support and encouragement to continue the pregnancy. Dee shared her faith and hope in God and helped the woman realize that God would help her through her crisis. Dee is still in touch with the woman and the baby is progressing well.

Knight of Columbus Miracle
Bob Falcone, a Knight of Columbus and former Grand Knight, was praying at an abortion center in northwest Indiana. A young Hispanic woman looked familiar to Bob and he called to her as she was heading into the center.

They spoke and Bob, not a trained sidewalk counselor, prayed mentally as he shared his faith and hope with the young woman and personally pledged to support her during her pregnancy and beyond. She listened intently and went into the center to hear their "counseling," which seemed more like a sales pitch. She kept remembering Bob's words and his sincerity and finally left the center and looked for him outside. She told him that she had decided not to have the abortion.

40 Days for Life & Miracles
Thank God for sidewalk counselors, Right to Life organizations, and Knights of Columbus. thank God also for 40 Days for Life. Working together as the Body of Christ, we will succeed.

Six Indiana Vigil Sites
There are six Indiana cities participating in the 40 Days for Life campaign this fall: Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Merrillville, South Bend, Warsaw.

These vigil sites will join over 200 other locations in 45 states, the District of Columbia and cities in several other countries.

August 27, 2009

40 Days I've been looking at photos from previous 40 Days for Life campaigns and wanted to share this one with you. A man ponders his pre-born child as he prays for an end to abortion while standing in front of Planned Parenthood in Indianapolis.

In only 27 days Hoosiers will be praying at six sites around the state for an end to abortion during the fall, 2009 40 Days for Life campaign. For sidewalk counselors, prayers and fasting go on all year long and God hears them from heaven and showers his grace on them. Last week there were five "saves" in Indianapolis - praise God!

64 "Saves" in Indianapolis in 2009
A "save" means that a mother has chosen life for her unborn child during her visit to an abortion center. In Indianapolis, the details are documented by sidewalk counselors and approved by Bob Rust, who makes the official call on whether or not the save will be counted. Since Jan. 1, 2009, 64 instances of women choosing life for the unborn babies have been documented so far according to Bob.

A Birthday Prayer
Last Monday, Aug. 17, witnessed a "save" at the Indianapolis Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion center in Indiana. Thursday morning, Aug. 20, Rita Rust suggested that her husband, Bob, pray that the Lord bring about and show him several "saves" in celebration of Bob's 78th birthday!

Bob drove his usual 66-mile trek from Greensburg to Planned Parenthood at 8590 Georgetown Drive in Indianapolis and God smiled on him and revealed three "saves" to Bob and Fran Adornado, another faithful sidewalk counselor. Bob calls them the "Father, Son and Holy Spirit saves." On the same day across town at 1201 N. Arlington, another woman chose life, bringing the day's total to four saves!

God Will Use Us to Save a Life
We can all be part of this beautiful mission by praying and fasting for an end to abortion. We can also prepare for the fall, 2009 40 Days for Life campaign, which begins in just 25 days on Wednesday, Sept. 23 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 1.

Challenge for 40 Days
If Bob Rust, at 78 years-young, can pray and fast two days a week and drive over 60 miles each way to be there at an abortion center for women and families, who need support in their decision for life, we can certainly commit to taking part in 40 Days for Life once a week during the fall campaign.
